an IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a numeric address that is given to servers and users connected to the internet. when you go "online" you are assigned an IP address by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

IP assignment

IP assignment is how your computer gets an IP address from your Internet Service Provider, your IP address may be the same every time you log on this is called a (static) or it can change and be assigned each time you connect (dynamic).

to use remote access services or applications such as PC Anywhere you will need to be able to locat your network over the internet. if you do not have a static IP address you can purchase one from your ISP or you can use the free service provided several providers

dynamic DNS (DDNS) allows you to create a hostname that points to your dynamic IP or static IP address or URL. most netgear routers contain an option to automatically update your IP address with dyndns servers. if your router does not support dynamic DNS, you can install client DNS update software that willautomatically update your ip address to the DynDNS server.
